In January 2014, the FDA issued a federal warning about AndroGel and other medications that may be associated with cardiovascular problems. The federal agency’s alert, which was announced on January 31, 2014, followed revelations published in November 2013 that heart attacks may be more frequent in testosterone drug users older than 65 years of age, and younger men with pre-existing cardiovascular problems. This information was contained in a study published in JAMA: Internal Medicine.

That September, the agency convened a federal panel of advisers, who agreed 20-1 that drug companies should be ordered to conduct safety studies that look at their products’ long-term effects on the heart. They also voted to adjust labeling on prescription testosterone drugs to indicate that they are FDA-approved strictly for men with hypogonadism, and to note that little evidence proving their effectiveness in treating low libido, fatigue, sexual dysfunction and other common symptoms of aging, the advisory panel said on September 17th, 2014.
